Risborough Rangers 2-3 Leighton Town

Andrew Parker3 Jan 2023 - 18:46

Leighton Town kicked off 2023 with an away win at Risborough on Monday.

Winning 2-3 at Windsor Playing Fields, Town continued their push to the summit of the Spartan with vital goals from Leon Lobjoit and Will Summerfield.
The visitors applied pressure from the off. Three minutes in, Connor Hunt began a day of fine saves as he kept out a header from close range. After Town argued with the ref that the ball had crossed the line, Hunt made another excellent stop on 25’. Summerfield fired low and hard, but the Rangers’ keeper was equal to it before his defence cleared.
On 32 minutes, Risborough finally folded. A ropey back pass set Lobjoit through. Hunt stood no chance as the prolific man rounded the Risborough no. 1.
The second half started with penalty shouts all round. First, the hosts’ Ollie Hogg went down to no avail. Then, up the other end, Joe Fitzgerald looked to handle the ball with Town up in arms but yet again, the ref wasn’t interested. Following this, the game entered a high tempo phase.
On 70’, Leighton doubled their lead. Good work from Archie McClelland bobbled through to Will Summerfield. Composed, he smashed home emphatically. Bircham’s side were jubilant, but Risborough took little time to respond - as just six minutes later Asher Yearwood provided a lifeline.
Rangers’ heads dipped slightly with the dismissal of Joel Read for a bad challenge on Ben Spaul on 77’. Hunt was called into further action with a great stop down to his left before Risborough buckled once more and conceded a penalty three minutes before time. Lobjoit’s initial kick was saved well but the keeper couldn’t stop the rebound to make it 1-3. Risborough played to the very last whistle and made it 2-3 in added time. However, this header from debutant Michael Harding was just too late.
Town now move second in the league after this one. The next game for Lee Bircham’s side is yet another away game – Hoddesdon Town in the league at The Stewart Edwards Stadium.

LTFC XI: Kirkwood; Towell, Connolly, Connolly (C), Jackson, Pyman, Flanagan, Spaul, McClelland, Lobjoit, Summerfield.
Subs: Robins, Marsh, Toomey, Fulton, Marsh-Brown.
